A silver 2 Mohars coin from the Kingdom of Nepal, struck during the reign of King Tribhuvan Bir Bikram Shah (r. 1911–1950). Like all traditional Nepalese coinage, this piece displays highly intricate symbolic geometric fields (yantras) and Devanagari script rather than a royal portrait.

About the Date

The Vikram Samvat (VS) calendar — still Nepal's official calendar today — is named after the legendary Emperor Vikramaditya of Ujjain, ancient India, and runs approximately 57 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar. On this coin, the date is split into two groups in Devanagari numerals: १९ (19) and ८५ (85), reading together as १९८५ (VS 1985). VS 1985 ran approximately from April 1928 to April 1929; the accepted Western numismatic date for this coin is 1928.

Iconography

Obverse: The royal name and titles of Tribhuvan Bir Bikram Shah Dev in Devanagari script surround a central Trishul (Trident), the sacred symbol of Lord Shiva, with auspicious symbols in the field.

Reverse: Carries the legends associated with Gorakhnath and Bhavani, deities of particular significance to the Shah Dynasty, within an intricate geometric border.
